DFTB, T. David Levitt: Refugee Health at DFTB17, Don't Forget the Bubbles, 2017. Available at:
This talk was recorded live at DFTB17 in Brisbane and was one of a trio of great talks covering the impact of global paediatric care – both at home and abroad.
Australia has been hailed as the ‘Lucky Country” but is it? Even after they have made it to Australia they face many other challenges – many of which might be a result of medicalisation of learned behaviour.
David Levitt is the Director of the General Paediatrics and Babies department of Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, as well as the lead Paediatrician at Brisbane’s Mater Refugee Complex Care Clinic.
At DFTB17, David spoke about integrating refugee children into Australian communities; primarily through schooling. He highlights that the school system is further stressed by limited funding without very specific diagnostic labeling. He encourages us to understand refugee children – particularly their cognitive and social functioning – from an integrated narrative and functional perspective.
