Bubble Wrap PLUS – June 2026

SHARE VIA:

Can’t get enough of Bubble Wrap? The Bubble Wrap Plus is a monthly paediatric Journal Club reading list from Professor Jaan Toelen (University Hospitals Leuven) and Dr Anke Raaijmakers (Sydney Children’s Hospital).

This comprehensive list is developed from 34 journals, including major and subspecialty paediatric journals. We suggest this list can help you discover relevant or interesting articles for your local journal club or allow you to keep a finger on the pulse of paediatric research.

Unlike in previous months, we are not going to give you the “highlights”. Instead, we will offer some intriguing questions…

  • Are children with ADHD suitable candidates for the treatment of constipation with transanal irrigation (water enema)?
  • Is complement C3 a good marker to assess severe malnutrition in patients with anorexia nervosa?
  • Are prenatal cannabis and opioid exposures associated with lower birth weight? And what about nicotine and alcohol?
  • Are management practices for uncomplicated acute otitis media in pediatric patients different on weekends versus weekdays in hospitals with well-established clinical guidelines?
  • Can maternal pantoprazole levels be detected in breast milk?
  • Is switching to conventional cigarettes the only effective way to help young adults quit vaping?
  • Is hypothermia a risk factor for mortality in young children presenting to the emergency department?
  • Is PET-CT a useful tool in the evaluation of fever of unknown origin in children?
  • Does maternal RSV vaccination influence the effect of infant nirsevimab administration?
  • Do hospitalised children exhibit excessive sedentary behaviour?
  • Have you ever heard of index finger vein inspection (“Zhiwen”) for assessing pneumonia severity in children?
  • How reliable is AI-based smartphone lung auscultation in detecting wheeze? And can AI outperform physicians in interpreting paediatric exanthems?
  • Does serotype 19A remain relevant despite its inclusion in licensed pneumococcal vaccines?
  • Is norovirus becoming the new rotavirus?
  • Do complex febrile seizures and familial predisposition increase the risk of recurrence?
  • Is the effect of HPV vaccination consistent across different regions of the world?

You will find the list is broken down into four sections:
